Bluemont Station
What eventually came to be known as Bluemont station was originally known as Snickersville due to its proxmity to the Snickers Gap
through the Blue Ridge.
It was built by the Southern Railway around 1900 when the line was extended four miles from
Round Hill. It was a classic style station built to one of Southern's standard designs. The original station subsequently
burned down (a common problem in those days) and was replaced by a far more utiltarian structure that lasted until that
portion of the line was abandoned in the 1930's. The grain mill seen in the left background was the only significant
shipper in Bluemont, and when that company went out of business, coupled with declining passenger traffic and
the need to replace to long wooden trestle east of Round Hill, service to Bluemont ended in 1932, and the
line was abandoned beyond Purcellville.
